La Sinfonía 5 de Mayo fue estrenada en la Ciudad de Puebla el 5 de mayo de 2015. El 6 de mayo la Sinfonía fue interpretada en el Centro Nacional de las Artes de la Ciudad de México. En ambos conciertos actuaron la soprano Enivia Muré, la Filarmónica 5 de Mayo, el Coro de la Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Magda Rey como directora del coro; todos ellos bajos la dirección del Mtro. Fernando Lozano. La recepción de la obra fue extraordinaria.

Sinfonía 5 de Mayo was premiered in the city of Puebla on May 5th 2015. The 6th of May the Symphony was performed in Mexico City’s National Center for the Arts. Both concerts were performed by soprano Enivia Muré, the Filarmónica 5 de Mayo, the Puebla Autonomous University Choir, Magda Rey as chorus master, all under the baton of Maestro Fernando Lozano. The reception of the work was extraordinary.

Orchestration

Woodwind:piccolo, 2 flutes, alto flute; 2 oboes, English horn; clarinet in E flat, 2 B flat clarinets, bass clarinet; 2 bassoon, contrabassoon.

Brass:5 horns, 4 trumpets in B flat, 3 trombones, bass trombone, tuba.

Percussion: timpani, bass drum, snare drum, gongs, cymbals, tubular bells, triangle, tambourine.

Piano and harp

Voices: mixed choir and soprano soloist.

String:violins I & II, violas, celli, double basses

Esta Sinfonía está dedicada el Pueblo poblano y a la Filarmónica 5 de Mayo.

Sinfonía 5 de Mayo is a work dedicated to the People of Puebla and to the Filarmónica 5 de Mayo –which is Puebla’s symphony orchestra.

El 5 de mayo es una de las fechas más importantes de nuestro calendario. Es la fecha nacional por antonomasia para los mexicanos que viven en el extranjero, especialmente para los mexicanos que viven en los Estados Unidos. Internacionalmente, el 5 de mayo tiene más peso que el día de nuestra Independencia. 

The Fifth of May is a milestone date in the Mexican calendar. It is the national day par excellence for Mexicans living abroad, especially for the Mexicans living in the United States. The Fifth of May is even more important than the Mexican Independence Day (September 16).

Esta Sinfonía es un homenaje al heroísmo que mostró la ciudad de Puebla para contener y rechazar al ejército francés que estaba invadiendo nuestra nación. El mensaje que ha querido transmitir el autor con esta sinfonía es este: México es grande, es una gran Nación con grandes hombres y gran cultura; no hay obstáculo que no podamos vencer, no hay nada que no podamos superar si estamos unidos.

This Symphony is a tribute to the heroic struggle shown by the city of Puebla who fought and drove back the French invaders. The statement the composer wants to transmit with this music is as follows: the greatness of Mexico, a land of great people and culture; there is no obstacle that cannot be overtaken by our People; there is nothing that cannot be surpassed if we are united.

V. El quinto movimiento es el himno de celebración Te Deum. Es cantado por el coro y la solista soprano.

V. The last movement is the Te Deum, a Celebration Anthem. It is sung by the choir and the soloist. 

IV. El cuarto movimiento representa el momento de la batalla. Es un movimiento muy brillante lleno de momentos dramáticos, pero también heroicos.

IV. The fourth movement depicts the battle (Rápido y tenso / Fast and tense). It is a very brilliant movement, full of dramatic and heroic moments.

III. El tercer movimiento es cantado. El texto que se entona es el célebre poema de Nezahualcóyotl “A dónde iremos”. Este movimiento evoca la plegaria que hace una madre, una esposa, una hija, una hermana, la víspera de la batalla, sabiendo que quizá su hijo, esposo, padre o hermano ya no volverá.

III. The third movement (Muy lento / Very slow) uses a poem written by the ancient ruler of Texcoco: Netzahualcóyotl, also known as the Poet-King. This poem (¿a dónde iremos? / where shall we go?) is about death and fate.

II. El segundo movimiento es una sátira del colonialismo del siglo XIX. Utiliza pasajes de “La marsellesa”.

II. The second movement is satirical (Scherzo-Burlesque. Fast). It mocks the XIX century colonialism. In this movement the composer uses “La Marseillaise”, the French National Anthem, not in a Tchaikovsky manner, but rather in a very interesting and impressive way.

I. El primero de ellos, de carácter grave, tenso, evoca el aciago momento por el que atravesaba nuestro país, una vez que el gobierno del Presidente Juárez recibió la noticia del desembarco de los franceses en el Golfo de México.

I. The first movement (Moderado, con cierta inquietud / Moderate, with a certain uneasiness) sets a grave and tense mood. It evokes the tragic moment that Mexico was suffering when president Juárez knew about the disembarking of the French in the Gulf of Mexico.

La Sinfonía 5 de Mayo es una obra musical épica para gran orquesta sinfónica, piano, arpa, percusiones, coro mixto y solista soprano, en cinco movimientos, con una duración aproximada de 70 minutos. Está inspirada en la heroica batalla de Puebla, del 5 de mayo de 1862, en la que el Ejército Mexicano derrotó a las tropas invasoras francesas. La Sinfonía tiene cinco movimientos: 

Sinfonía 5 de Mayo (The 5th of May Symphony) is an epic work for grand symphony orchestra, piano, harp, percussions, mixed choir and soprano soloist, in five movements, written by Venus Rey Jr. during the fall of 2014 and premiered on May 5th 2015 in the city of Puebla. It last around 70 minutes. The work is inspired by the heroic battle of Puebla, May 5th 1862, in which the Mexican Army defeated the French invading troops. The Symphony has five movements:
